After being saved from the meat trade, two cute Pitbulls who were raised together got a second chance at life, and they finally found a place to call their own.
Backpack and Toad, along with 11 other dogs, were found by people from Harbin SHS Animal Rescue.
Rachel Hinman told The Dodo that all 13 dogs had been abandoned on a property in China and were destined for the meat trade.
The property’s loanshark was going to sell all of the sick and neglected dogs to the meat industry, but Rachel and her team stepped in to save the dogs.
Backpack and Toad were two of the poor pups. Backpack was sick and skinny to the point that she was about to die. Thanks to the right medical care, she was able to get better. Toad was getting better, but he still needed some care.
In the end, all 13 dogs found permanent homes through the organization, but the people who helped didn’t want Backpack and Toad to be split up. They were so close and sweet to each other that it was like they were sisters.
Instead of separating them, volunteers from Harbin SHS Animal Rescue tried to find a home for both of them. Lucky for them, they were able to get in touch with Jed Ballou in the United States.
Jed lives near Seattle in the state of Washington. He wanted to adopt both Backpack and Toad. He knew it would be a long trip to get them, but he was ready to do it.
About a year after they were saved, the two puppies met Jed for the first time, and it went very well.
When they met in Los Angeles, California, Toad and Jed got along right away. Even though she had been through a lot, she was trusting, loving, and just happy to have someone to love. Backpack was a little more shy, but Toad helped her feel comfortable enough to go with Jed and start her new life.
Jed told The Dodo that Backpack and Toad when he brought them home were “totally clueless to everything that a typical domesticated dog would be aware of.”
He let them “figure things out” and refused to push them into anything they weren’t comfortable or ready for. He knew before he adopted them that they wouldn’t be like other dogs because of what they went through before being saved, but he’s willing to give them the love and space they need to overcome their problems and thrive.
Backpack and Toad have been in Jed’s life for more than a year. They were saved from the meat trade more than two years ago. Backpack still has trouble dealing with the trauma she went through as a puppy, but Toad has adjusted well to life with a loving owner.
Jed wrote on Instagram that Backpack has a lot of anxiety and that she is a very “difficult dog.” He loves her and does his best to take care of her, but she needs medicine to help her get through everyday life.
Toad is there to help her feel better, and the two of them are enjoying their new home, family, and a second chance at life.
