Before he met Takis, Phoenix thought that a human hand could only hurt him. He lived his whole life at the end of a chain, and a man who the police said was dangerous beat him. People had told the police that the dog was being hurt, so the police went and took the dog away.
The police didn’t know how to deal with Phoenix’s aggression, so they called Takis, who runs a shelter in the hills of Ierapetra, Crete, Greece.
When they got to the shelter, Phoenix wouldn’t leave the crate at first. The dog lunged at Takis’s gloved hand and growled at it. Phoenix was afraid of hands because he had learned that they were used to hurt him.
Takis didn’t force the situation and tells Phoenix, “We will try again later and we will be very good friends, soon, ya?”
Later that same day, Takis helped out once more. But this time, the dog is too tired to fight. He gives in to love by putting his head in Takis’ hand. After a while, he offers Takis his paw. Takis is so happy that he can’t hold it in and tells the dog “Bravo!”
“It took Phoenix some time to get used to the fact that a hand doesn’t mean pain,” explains Takis. But Phoenix’s behavior changed dramatically over time. Even though his previous owner said he killed cats, he gets along with the cats at the shelter. And “he’s doing great with everyone” says Takis. All he wanted, all he needed, was love.
