Katie Newhouser is a UPS driver in Rancho Cucamonga, California. When she came to the apartment complex where Leo lived, he would greet her and get in her car.
Because Leo’s mother had died, she offered to foster him. But he became so close to his new brother that she made the arrangement long-term.
“I met Leo and his mom Tina on my route – they lived in the condo complex that I deliver to,” Katie told Life With Dogs. “He would always bark for her to let him come down to the truck to see me. He would hop into my truck and make himself at home!”
Katie went on vacation. When she returned to work, she saw Tina’s son, Canon, leaving the complex with furniture in the back of his truck. Tina had told her that the association was bothering her about Leo, even though he was a friendly boy. She thought Tina was moving because she had said to her that the association was bothering her about Leo. It broke Katie’s heart to find out that the woman had died when she looked at her Facebook page.
Katie reached out to Canon and offered to take Leo in until he returned from the Marines. He fell in love with her Lab mix, Moose, as time passed. The two of them couldn’t be apart.
“He realized that Leo had bonded with my dog Moose and he couldn’t go back to being a single dog.”
Bailey, Madison, and Mocha are three of Leo’s new friends and his brother Moose. In the beginning, it was clear that Leo missed his mom even though he’s done very well with his new family.
“At first it was a little sad, he would whine a bit at night. I believe that he missed Tina,” Katie explained. “He is the biggest cuddle bug that you will ever meet. There are many times when I wake up and he is resting his head on mine.”
I bet you didn’t know, but UPS DOGS has a fantastic Facebook page. It’s all the great dogs’ UPS drivers meet while making deliveries. In Katie’s post, she talked about Leo, and her story spread quickly.
Before getting Leo, she didn’t know how bad the stigma was about pit bulls. She now happily tells people how cute Leo is and how much personality he has to help people see that pit bulls aren’t bad.
“He love to snag things off of the counter and have you chase him,” Katie said. “He is a character! He really is the best dog.”
Leo doesn’t seem to be wearing a prong collar in this picture.
