It’s very rare to see stray dogs seek help from people. They are often scared and avoid human contact unless they are approached with food. That’s why it was very surprising when one dog came to an animal shelter in Greece by himself.
The dog was lying on the ground outside Takis Shelter, a well-known rescue shelter in Crete, Greece. The other dogs inside the shelter alerted the owner, so he checked what was going on. He found the dog shaking and whimpering. The weather was cold during that time, so he had to hurry and bring the dog inside.
Takis, the owner, already had a lot of dogs inside his establishment. However, despite that, he always had room for more. He couldn’t just leave a dog who came to him for help.
After bringing the dog inside and placing him near a warm fireplace, his condition improved. The next day, the dog was already walking around and exploring the inside of Takis’s home. Although he is still very shy and would often hide if approached.
Takis named the dog Smart. He also gave the dog lots of food and allowed him to socialize. The other dogs in the shelter welcomed him, and every one of them, including Smart, was wagging their tail.
It was obvious that Smart needed some time before he could fully recover. He is still very shy and scared of a lot of things. Fortunately, any dog under Takis’s care has a good chance of becoming a great domestic dog.
It’s not every day that Takis encounters dogs coming to the shelter alone. Perhaps someone might have dropped Smart off there. But the possibility of the former being true is still high. Regardless of how Smart actually came to Takis, what’s important is that he is safe now.
