Amid Hurricane Irma, Jessica Lewis decided that she and her dog, Luna, should leave their college town and drive home to Lewis’ family near Atlanta. Classes were being canceled because of the storm, but Lewis had one more class to go to before the two could leave.
Lewis didn’t want to waste any time, so she thought it would be best to bring Luna to her last class with her so that they could leave right after. First, she had to ask her professor if that was OK.
Having a dog in class was something that Lewis didn’t know how her professor would react to, so she wrote him a very detailed and thoughtful email. She begged him for the chance to bring Luna to class, and it worked! She even sent him a few pictures of Luna, hoping that her cute face would make him change his mind.
Lewis waited impatiently for her professor to get back to her. When he did, he sent her an email.
She was surprised and happy to learn that she didn’t have to worry about anything.
“Did you think calling me ‘cool’ would get me to say yes,” Lewis’ professor wrote. “Because it won’t work. What will work is that she’s obviously a good girl so of course you can bring her.”
As it turns out, Lewis’ professor is a big fan of dogs, and Luna was more than welcome to join him in his last class before the hurricane hit. Luna was also a big hit with the rest of the class and was a great student for the whole hour and 15 minutes.
“She was pretty well-behaved in class,” Lewis told The Dodo. “She went straight to whoever was talking for the most part, like if someone was answering or asking a question. Just walked around and got pets from everyone and made friends. The really funny part was that every time the professor stopped and asked if anyone had questions or comments, she whined loudly like she was responding. It was hilarious.”
Even though Luna was a little bit of a distraction in class, no one seemed to mind, and the professor liked having her around.
“He loved having her and had no complaints at all,” Lewis said. “He was wonderful about it; he just laughed with us whenever she did something funny.”
Luna loved the class as much as everyone else did. When the class was over, Luna and her mom had to start their drive home to avoid the storm.
They could get out of the way quickly, thanks to the kind professor. They could get home safely and make everyone else in the class smile.
