Despite not having a home or anyone who cared for him, the stray dog had this fluffy teddy bear.
At the end of last week, an independent dog rescuer was driving through a neighborhood of homes in Montgomery, Texas. Kourtnee Blount saw the puppy snuggled up with a toy teddy bear on the grass between two houses.
“As I turned the corner, I saw him lying there with the bear,” Blount told The Dodo. “I believe he pulled it out of someone’s trash because there was a lot of other trash scattered around him.”
“It broke my heart,” Blount added. “It was so sad.”
Many people let their dogs run around freely in that neighborhood, so Blount first wondered if someone owned the dog. No one claimed him, and some residents said they’d seen the dog for a month.
Blount put pictures of the dog and his teddy bear on Facebook and asked if anyone could help him. Destiny Swatzel, an independent rescuer, agreed to help. However, when Swatzel went to get the dog, which they named Teddy, she thought that was too late.
“I went looking for him on Monday and found him lying in the middle of the road,” Swatzel told The Dodo. “I honestly thought he was dead and went into panic mode.”
Only when Swatzel got out of her car and approached him that Teddy raise his head.
“I whistled for him to come to me,” Swatzel said. “Sweet little guy walked right up to me and let me slip a leash around him.”
She also saw the teddy bear, but she decided not to take it because the bear was wet and moldy. Teddy, the dog, will now have people who care for him and he didn’t need his teddy bear anymore.
Swatzel checked Teddy for a microchip right away but couldn’t find one. He also didn’t have a collar or anything else to show who he was before.
“While in the car, he threw up chicken bones, pieces of plastic, rocks, and leaves,” Swatzel said. “He clearly had been surviving on the streets.”
Afterward, Swatzel took Teddy back to her house, where she fed and bathed him and let him play with the dogs she had taken in. Teddy then went to Mary St. Dizier’s house later that day, which was supposed to be his foster home, but it turned out to be Teddy’s home.
St. Dizier fell in love with Teddy the moment she saw him. “I cried,” St. Dizier told The Dodo. “I knew he was staying with me.”
Teddy, who is now called Blue, loves to play with his new dog brother, Bear, and his cat sister, Patches. He also loves going to the dog park and getting belly rubs while on the couch.
“He’s doing very well,” St. Dizier said. “He’s a sweet, well-behaved dog. He’s a lovable little baby.”
