On a cold winter day, Tom Sluit came home and found that someone was in his house.
Tom says he went into his living room and saw a “very skinny dog” on his couch. When he saw that the dog was on a leash, he knew that someone had been looking for him.
It turns out that someone really missed him. One week after he had been lost, River was able to come home.
Jean Strobel had just adopted River. She spent a week looking for him after he ran away. Since its winter, it was very cold outside. Jean was worried about how River was coping with the cold.
While River was away from Jean for a whole week, he wasn’t completely absent from the scene. He had been seen a lot of times, each time a few miles away from where he was seen the day before.
Its possible River was afraid and had a hard time dealing with the cold. He broke into the Sluit’s house to stay warm. Thanks to the “lost dog” posters that had been put up around town, he was able to get into the right house.
At first, when the Sluits told Jean that they’d found River, she thought they were joking. In the end, she was happy when they sent her a picture of him all snuggled up on a blanket. River was okay, and she could take him home right away.
