Ryan Sesselman, 19, was at a local adoption event when he saw this fluffy rescue puppy. He knew right away that she would be a part of his family.
That’s not all that Sesselman’s mother needed to hear.
He knew that his mom would be wary of adding more dogs to their family because they already had two. In that case, he came up with letting people on Twitter choose for them.
After all, if it were meant to be, the momentum of public opinion would have to push it forward, right?
“I asked my mom how many retweets it would take to convince her. I suggested 10,000 — thinking that’s a lot and she will agree,” Sesselman told The Dodo. “She then replies, ‘One million.'”
Now, it’s important to point out that Sesselman isn’t a big name on the internet. He thought it was crazy that his plea for a dog would get any attention, let alone reach a million people. He only had 200 followers on Twitter.
With such a cute dog on the line, Sesselman won’t be afraid of the odds, even if they’re big.
“I decided to give it a shot,” he said.
Then something entirely out of the blue happened: It worked.
“I posted it that afternoon, and when I woke up the next day I had 222 retweets and was impressed. The entire day my friends and I who went and saw her yesterday were just watching the retweets go up and up and up,” Sesselman said. “I woke up the next day and it had 149,000 retweets, which I couldn’t believe. It was unreal to me that 149,000 people retweeted it, and then it just spread so much faster after that. In four days I got one million retweets, making it the 10th most-retweeted tweet of all time.”

Sesselman was stunned — and he wasn’t alone.
“My mom could not believe it. She never thought it would happen,” Sesselman said.
But she kept her end of the deal. They went together to see the dog who had Sesselman’s heart that day. And, of course, it happened to his mother, too!
“The second she saw her, she fell in love,” Sesselman said. “We filled out the adoption forms and everything that was needed to bring her home with us that day.”
That seemingly impossible number of retweets led Sesselman to name his family’s new dog “Milli.”
Having a home was the best thing that could have happened to Milli.
Sesselman couldn’t be happier. In the end, the whole thing has been a real eye-opener about the power of being positive.
I think it’s important to think carefully before you decide to adopt a dog because it will change your life. That wasn’t the case for Sesselman. He had to get the help of a million strangers to show his mother that he had made the right choice.
“Anything is possible, honestly,” he said. “It’s truly incredible how well this turned out. Milli is the cutest little puppy and makes us all so happy.”
