It is anticipated that Rex, the German shepherd, will make a complete recovery.
Although there are some canines who are said to be man’s best friend, Rex the German shepherd is this young man’s hero.
After being shot many times while protecting Javier Mercado, age 16, who was home alone when his family’s house near Seattle, Washington, was broken into, the pet dog, who is 2 years old and has been shot multiple times, is beginning to heal from his injuries.
Rex is still receiving his pain medicine even though he has not yet returned from the animal hospital where he was treated. The bullets broke the German shepherd’s bones, but doctors are hopeful that he will make a full recovery despite his wounds.
“I just want to thank my dog,” Mercado told CBS News. “If it wasn’t for him, I don’t feel like I’d be standing here right now.”
He went on to say that he and Rex were the only two people in the house at the time when he heard a furious banging on a glass door.
After the door was broken, he quickly hid behind a closet and called 911, telling the operator what was going on minute by minute.
However, Rex immediately sprang into action.
“My dog sprinted downstairs and started barking really loud […] then one of the guys screamed, ‘Get the dog, the dog bit me, the dog bit me,’” Mercado recalled. “Then I heard one gunshot, then several after that. My dog cries after each shot. It’s the worst thing I’ve ever seen.”
The officers reported that upon their arrival, they discovered that Rex had been shot, but that they were able to get both the dog and the boy to safety.
After inspecting the residence, the police informed KCPQ that they were unable to locate the suspects. According to members of the family, the suspects must have fled the scene as soon as they heard the sirens.
“They didn’t hesitate shooting Rex or hold back on anything,” Mercado said. “If Rex wasn’t there, they would have opened that door and they would have saw me in there.”
