In South Korea, the regular consumption of dog meat is considered normal. Dog meat is considered a cultural delicacy and is popular throughout the summer. Thankfully, this habit is fading, and South Koreans are increasingly viewing dogs as pets as opposed to food.
In reality, an increasing percentage of South Koreans refuse to consume dog meat, and the bulk of the population has never ever tried it. The Humane Society International is an organization that continues to combat the dog meat trade in South Korea, and they have rescued tens of thousands of dogs and continue to do so.
The Humane Society International was able to save 200 dogs from a dog meat farm that they were able to close down. The owner of the dog meat farm indicated that he had every intention of closing down his operation and seeking alternative means of income. The owner’s children were opposed, despite the demand for canine meat in South Korea is already declining.
All of the pets were kept in confined spaces and were mistreated. Thankfully, they were saved just in time by Humane Society International workers and volunteers.
All the dogs were examined by a veterinarian before being flown to the United States and Canada, where they would have the opportunity to find permanent homes.
We cannot fathom the atrocities and suffering that the dogs go through on the dog meat farm. However, they are always willing to forgive and will eventually regain trust and affection for humans.
All the dogs from the dog meat farm were rehomed in permanent, loving homes, and they began to acclimate to life in a proper home.
The work of the Humane Society International is an inspiration to us all. While the majority of us may not be in South Korea or any other country to assist in the end the dog meat trade, we can still help by raising awareness.
