There was a time when this dog, named Columbo, didn’t have a friend in the whole world. Someone found the little dog wandering around outside of Columbus Ohio. It’s possible that he was hit by a car, which made things even worse.
But then kindness came into his life, and things started to change quickly.
When Jarrett Little and his friend were on a group bike ride in the area, he decided to stop for a few minutes on the path. It was there that he saw Columbo in the distance all alone.
“At first, I thought it was a fox,” Little’s friend, Chris Dixon, told the Ledger-Enquirer. “Then this dog started running across the road toward us. He looked terrible. He was hungry. He was in bad shape, but he seemed happy to see us.”
Columbo was hurt, but he was happy to get food and attention from the cyclists. Little knew that he had to do more, which meant coming up with new ideas.
“We couldn’t leave him,” he said.
He tried several ways to carry the dog on his bike, but he came up with this: he put Columbo’s legs in his back pockets and let him ride piggyback to safety,
The little dog’s luck only got better from there.
Columbo and Little met Andrea Shaw when they arrived downtown after a 30-minute ride together. She’s from Maine and was in Ohio for business. Columbo ran up to her and started licking her like they had known each other for a long time.
Love at first sight. When Shaw heard the dog’s story, she knew right away that Columbo should be in her life. The lonely stray had found his new home right away.
Of course, before Columbo could start his new life as Shaw’s pet, he’d need to get better.
For Columbo to get better, he had to go to the emergency vet and have two fractures fixed.
Before long, Columbo was on the road again. This time, he went to Shaw and his new family in Maine to meet them.
Columbo, who went from being a stray pup to being a pet in a matter of days, still needs to heal. There is enough love for him to get through.
Among those cheering for Columbo’s happy ending is the man who started the whole thing with kindness and compassion.
“They say the odds of winning the lottery are one in a million. This pup was the winner this week,” Little wrote online. “[An] amazing series of fortunate events.”
