Dog adoption isn’t just about getting treats, walks, and toys. It’s a lot of work. It also requires a special love for one’s dog, even if they have a lot of flaws.
When 19-year-old Ariana Smoak took in a puppy named Sunny, she didn’t know much about him. It didn’t take long for Ariana to figure out that Sunny was a ridiculous dog when he settled into his new home.
As it turns out, Sunny loves old bricks more than anything else on this planet!
Sunny was a puppy when Ariana adopted him; it wasn’t always the cleanest or cute thing you could get in the mail.
“I rescued him and his siblings last year from the street,” Ariana told BuzzFeed. “They were all covered in fleas, and the mom had missing teeth and a skin condition. We cared for them for weeks.”
It was only until Ariana revealed the name of Sunny’s best friend in a tweet that the cute dog went viral.
“My dog’s best friend is a brick,” Ariana tweeted Tuesday. Now that’s a new one!

It’s not just a short-lived thing. Sunny met the brick when he was a puppy. And he still plays with his brick today!
“Since he was a puppy he would [lie] with it, kiss it, and chew on it,” Ariana told BuzzFeed. “We don’t know why, and our other two dogs have no interest in it.”
“The response [to my tweet] has been wild,” Ariana told BuzzFeed. “I never would’ve expected this to blow up like it did.”
“I’m happy I got to show the world the goofy side of him I see every day,” Ariana said.
If you’re not sure why an old brick was in Ariana’s house in the first place, you might wonder.
It looks like it’s just a part of the room used to keep the rug down.
Sunny’s attraction to the brick is still a mystery.
During Sunny’s 15 minutes of fame, Ariana wants to spread an important message: “I want to shed light on why people should spay and neuter their pets because there are a lot more animals not as fortunate as Sunny,” she said.
