The Humane Society International is a non-profit organization dedicated to stopping the dog meat trade in South Korea. They recently rescued dogs from a facility in Goyang, where residents raised them for consumption. The majority of the dogs will be sent to shelters in New York, Pennsylvania, and Maryland.
They worked with local groups to negotiate the release of the dogs from a farm in Goyang. The Humane Society International will help find new homes for dogs in the United States. After undergoing health exams and any necessary medical treatment, the dogs will be ready for adoption.
Adam Parascandola, HSI’s Director of Animal Protection, said the dogs suffered for far too long. They were inside a filthy cage and exposed to the elements outside in all weather extremes, with no protection from the cold. They were glad to be able to provide them with a safe home where they could begin a new chapter in their lives.
The rescue team found a total of 55 dogs. Some puppies were born and bred on-site. The dogs were kept in tiny wire cages, unable to move their bodies or turn around.
Some even looked like they couldn’t properly breathe. The smell of ammonia permeated throughout the facility because there was no clean water for them to drink or wash. The rescuers came armed with blankets, food, and water for each dog.
A vet will check each dog’s health, provide vaccinations, proper care, and nourishment, including heartworm treatment if needed. It is important to do what you can to help animals like these. One way is simply to spread awareness about the issue, especially since so many people are oblivious to the violence that occurs behind closed doors.
Be sure to continue to be an advocate for animal rights by learning how to get involved in helping animals in need.
