When someone says, “Money does not grow on trees,” that’s true for everyone except this cute puppy. When Negro, a clever dog, paid vendors with fallen leaves, he could buy a never-ending supply of dog treats.
He lives on the Diversified Technical Education Institute’s Monterrey Casanare site. He acts as a school protector, keeping an eye on things while students study.
In exchange, the faculty looks over Negro, giving him food, water, attention, and a safe place to sleep.
But it seems the dog has decided that everything beyond that is his prerogative.
Negro learned about the campus store where students buy snacks; they’d sometimes buy him cookies. It is where the dog first learned about trade and decided to give it a go.
“He would go to the store and watch the children give money and receive something in exchange,” Angela Garcia Bernal, a teacher, told The Dodo. “Then one day, spontaneous, he appeared with a leaf in his mouth, wagging his tail and letting it be known that he wanted a cookie.”
Negro had devised his currency, which was, of course, accepted. Leaves can buy treats!
The only way he ever pays is with a leaf. He buys it daily. Because Negro’s false currency practically grows on trees, the store’s employees decided to limit Negro’s purchases to a few times every day.
“When you first see it, you almost want to cry,” Bernal said. “He’s found a way to make himself understood. He’s very intelligent.”
