When a dog covered in heavily matted fur arrived at an animal hospital in South Carolina, Betty Burns, along with her fellow animal rescue volunteers, was shocked.
Animal control services had alerted Burns about a matted dog wandering around a neighborhood in Clinton, South Carolina. However, nothing could have prepared her for seeing the dog up close.
According to Burns, if they did not hear the poor dog panting, they would not be able to know which end of his body was his head. The condition of his matted fur was so bad that they couldn’t see the dog’s eyes, nose, or mouth. The rescuers had no idea how the dog managed to get around with his severely matted fur.
Burns, groomers, and medical professionals teamed up to sedate the poor pooch and free him from his fur.
In a span of four hours, about 15 pounds of fur managed to fill up two garbage bags. The groomers said his previous owners must have kept him in a crate for more than a year for his hair to get so matted.
With the animal buried under so much hair, they couldn’t tell what dog breed he was. However, once the team’s work was complete, the adorable pooch turned out to be a cocker spaniel mix, and they called him “Pat the Mat.”
After his haircut, Pat immediately began running around and playing. He was thrilled to be a dog again.
Despite everything he has been through, Pat looks intent on looking forward to the future.
Burns said that Pat is an absolute sweetheart. He gets around well and is a favorite of everybody at the clinic.
Fortunately, a rescue organization stepped up to take care of the senior dog. Now, Pat is living comfortably with his new and loving foster family.
