One catastrophic tornado back in 2013 leveled Moore, Oklahoma, and left behind terrifying wreckage in its wake. And amid the massive debris that enveloped the city, search and rescue teams scoured every inch to try and save anyone who might have been trapped.
Molly Gib, a professional search and rescue volunteer, worked with the local animal control and the American Humane Rescue team to respond to animals buried underneath. It took long days of the combined teams’ continuous effort to locate survivors. And it was during her search that Gib found a tiny pit bull terrier puppy barely hanging on its life.
Gib searched for anyone looking for the puppy but when no one came she took on the great responsibility and challenge of taking care of and raising the poor thing. Gib named the puppy Little Man and believed that it was Little Man’s bravery and good bones that helped him survive. Gib and Little Man became partners ever since.
Little Man recovered under Gib’s care and he showed characteristics that Gib thought would make for a good search and rescue dog. Gib nurtured these traits and eventually, Little Man was able to take his talents to new heights. Little Man is now certified with the National Association of Search and Rescue.
Little Man takes on several forms of assignments on the field and he is always on the top of his game. Their team also expanded influence by partnering with law enforcement throughout the U.S. to help people after a disaster or personal tragedy. However, last year became the highlight of Little Man’s career.
Little Man made a huge discovery last year when he found a traumatized assault victim alive. Little Man went full circle from barely surviving wreckage to helping survivors of all sorts. Despite all the hours this little hero puts in, he never loses the spirit and enthusiasm which helped him land as a finalist for the American Humane 2021 Hero Dog Awards and it is well deserved.
