Like people, animals have a natural instinct to look after their young. When a dog was found in Ontario, Canada, protecting a litter of kittens from the cold night air, it gave the term “foster mom” a whole new meaning.
A woman was driving down the road in Ontario, Canada, that weekend. The night was particularly cold and rough, but the driver stopped when she saw a dog curled up on the side of the road.
The dog, a female stray, was shivering and looked very cold. The woman quickly realized why the dog hadn’t moved to a warmer place to spend the night, even though she probably could have. She didn’t try to find a warm place for herself; instead, she curled up around five kittens to keep them warm.
The woman acted quickly and called Pet and Wildlife Rescue, which was a good thing. The six furry friends were all brought to the shelter by the animal control officer.
People who worked there were amazed and excited to hear about this amazing story of selflessness. If the dog hadn’t stayed to protect the kittens, all five of them would have died that night. A representative from the shelter told The Dodo, “Our staff sees a lot of hard things every day, but stories like this one make it all worth it.”
No one knows if the kittens and the dog knew each other in a past life or if they just happened to meet by chance, which turned into a heartwarming story. When the kittens were getting treated for fleas and worms, their foster mother made sure to check on them often and was very proud of them.
The kind dog, whose name was Serenity, was eventually put up for adoption with a forever family, and eventually, she found a home.
Even though the shelter staff was worried they would get in trouble for putting her up for adoption without the kittens, it was the only way to find Serenity a home as soon as possible. The shelter always tries to find permanent homes for dogs as soon as possible, but the kittens weren’t ready to leave the shelter yet.
As Serenity says on the shelter’s Facebook page, “At the end of the day I am just happy that the kittens were found with me and are now resting peacefully in a warm foster home instead of outside in the cold.”
No matter what happens, the story of Serenity’s kindness will stay with the kittens she saved, the staff at the shelter, and the many people who have read or heard her story.
