Imagine the stress and worry a puppy would feel if he were left behind in a public bathroom. It must have been scary, especially since he didn’t know that a kind stranger would come to his aid.
Hugo was only five weeks old at the time, which is too young for a puppy to be able to live on its own. He wasn’t really alone because he was left with his two siblings, but they are still puppies and need care and attention all the time. Hugo and his sisters were lucky that they were saved and taken to a shelter.
Every event happens for a reason. Hugo was left alone so he could find and live with a human parent who would love and care for him. Carrie is a medical foster parent, and she chose to adopt Hugo on her own. As a medical foster, she takes in dogs that need to stay for a long time and puppies with serious injuries.
Even though Hugo was sick, Carrie was brought into his life to give him a comfortable place to live. Carrie says that Hugo has a number of illnesses that set him apart from other dogs. He couldn’t move his back legs, and he had seizures during his first week at Carrie’s. Hugo’s neurologist found that the seizures were caused by an inflammation in his spine.
“We weren’t sure if he was going to make it or not; they hadn’t seen a case like this before. He has a form of dwarfism. He has neuro issues. He has immune issues as well,” Carrie shared.
Because of his condition, even simple bug bites hurt for more than 24 hours and he needs to take medicine. Hugo’s body acts differently than other dogs’ because of these health problems. Still, his illness makes him even more unique, and he grew up to be a loving dog. With the help of a supportive home and several therapies, his mobility has gotten better.
Hugo is a loving dog who brings light and warmth to the people around him, even though he is sick. He and his sister, Denali, are therapy dogs. Carrie takes them to airports and schools to meet new people. Hugo has grown up to be a happy, active dog, but he gets tired quickly.
Hugo has been cared for and helped the most by Carrie and her shelter. She became so close to Hugo that he now curls up next to her at night and sleeps close to her heart. Hugo may not live as long as he would like because of his situation, so the medical foster makes sure that he has the best life possible.

Carrie runs an Instagram account where she shares Denali and Hugo-related content. You can also find them at Suncoast Animal League, a non-profit organization that Carrie supports. Aside from cats and dogs, the shelter also takes in animals that have been rescued.
Hugo and Denali have been able to inspire a lot of people thanks to the organization. Hugo’s story shows that it’s okay to be different and that you can still be happy even when things don’t go as planned.
