When John Hawng saw a scared 10-year-old shelter dog huddled in the corner of her pen, he didn’t think she would want his attention or love. She surprised him right away, though, and now everyone who meets sweet Annabelle falls in love with her.
After Hwang went to see Annabelle at the Baldwin Park Animal Shelter, he posted about her on Facebook with a few sad pictures. Right away, people started sharing her story, hoping to find someone to take her out of the shelter. Annabelle was scared, but she still had a lot of love to give. She just needed the right person to give her a chance.
And not long after Hwang wrote about it on Facebook, someone did.
When a volunteer for Leashes of Love Rescue, Inc. saw the post about Annabelle, she knew she had to do something. She told people at the rescue about Annabelle, and the next day, they put a hold on her.
The next day, they finally went to meet Annabelle and take her away from the shelter for good. The sweet senior dog was so happy to be let out of her lonely cage.
“She was so excited and loving,” Taunya Huffman Henley, president of Leashes of Love Rescue, told The Dodo. “She has a calm energy and loves to be held. When she gets excited she spins in a circle.”
Annabelle was taken to the vet right away, but he didn’t think she was in the best of health. She is getting treatment for a tumor on her head, an eye infection, dental problems, and a skin rash.
Annabelle is now in her foster home resting and getting better, and she loves every minute of it. She slept right next to her foster mom for the first day and a half in her new home. She wouldn’t move until her foster mom took her outside or fed her. She is living with a few foster dogs, and she is getting used to them day by day.
“She doesn’t play with them much, as she is adjusting to her new surroundings, but little by little she is mixing in,” Huffman Henley said. “We believe that once we get all of her vetting done she will feel much better. Her foster mom works from home so she mostly sits on her lap and wants to be carried everywhere.”
Annabelle went from being barely noticed in a big shelter to being loved and cared for all day by many people, and she couldn’t be happier. Even though she is an older puppy, she still has a lot of love to give and can’t wait to find her forever home and family.
